It is fair to say that the dog days of summer are here. This means your AC unit will be working overtime. Not only has it been hot outside, but we have also seen a lot of rain which means the humidity levels have been going through the roof. A well-maintained AC unit will not only keep you cool during the long days of Summer, but also keep the humidity out of your home. Air Conditioners remove heat and humidity using the refrigerant in the system. If you feel humidity and dampness in your home, it could be a sign that there is an issue with your AC.

Why Is Humidity So Dangerous?

Too much humidity can actually make you sick. Did you know that bacteria and viruses that cause illness thrive and grow in air that’s above 60 percent relative humidity? As a matter of fact, keeping humidity levels between 30-50 percent will make you feel comfortable and will help avoid health effects, according to the EPA. Mold and fungi also prefer higher humidity levels 75% and up.  Mold and fungi exacerbate respiratory conditions such as asthma. Molds have the potential to cause health problems. Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances (mycotoxins). They say low humidity may also discourage pests (such as cockroaches) and dust mites.
